Here’s the Thing About Fresh Haircuts and New School Years

There’s a moment every barber knows. A kid walks in nervous. Mom’s worried about the wait. Dad’s checking his phone. But thenabout halfway through the cutsomething shifts. The kid sees themselves in the mirror. Not the old them. The new them. Sharp. Clean. Ready.

That moment? That’s what we’re chasing with our First Annual Back-to-School Free Haircut Day.

We’re opening all four Straight 8 locations with free haircuts for every student from Kindergarten through Grade 12. No appointments. No catch. No “free haircut plus a $50 product you didn’t know you needed.” Just us, our barbers, and the mission to send every kid into the school year feeling like they’ve got this.

Why We’re Doing This

Straight 8 has been part of the Kamloops and Vernon communities for years now. We’ve cut hair for grandkids of our first customers. We’ve watched families grow. And we’ve learned something important: confidence matters. A lot.

Barbers remember what it felt like to be the new kid—the one with the iffy haircut. (Not fun.) So we’re making sure that’s not anyone’s story this year.

Plus, while we’re at it, we’re using the day to help local food banks. Because a fresh haircut matters. So does knowing families have food on the table.

Free haircuts on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to barber availability and capacity.

Real Talk: What’s the Day Like?

Come in anytime during event hours. First come, first served. Will there be a line? Probably—especially mid-morning. Our advice? Come early (aim for 8:45 a.m.) or after 3 p.m. for shorter waits. Bring a book, grab a coffee, chill. Our team will get you in the chair and make it quick and good.

No appointment needed. No booking online. Just walk in.

Your kids need to have a parent or guardian with them. (Obviously.)

Show Off That Fresh Cut in the Straight 8 Race Car

After their haircut, every kid gets the chance to hop in the Straight 8 race car for a back-to-school photo. No jokekids look cool in that thing.

Parents, snap your own photos. We’ll also have a photographer on site. And if you want to share your pics on social media? Tag us at #Straight8BackToSchool. You might just see yourself on our Instagram. (And yes, we’ll need parent permission for any photos—that’s non-negotiable.)

More Than Just a Haircut

Here’s what we’re also asking: bring a non-perishable food donation if you can.

Food donations collected at the Kamloops locations will go to the Kamloops Food Bank. Donations at the Vernon location support the Vernon Community Foodbank.

Here’s the real talk: donations are optional. Your kid gets a free, sharp haircut either way. But if you’ve got some extra canned goods, pasta, or other non-perishables, you’re not just helping your kid feel confident—you’re helping local families gear up for the school year too.

That’s pretty cool.

Who Can Get a Free Haircut?

Kindergarten through Grade 12 students. That’s it. That’s the eligibility.

Walk in, be a student, get a free haircut. Easy.

No purchase required. No membership. No surprise fees.

Real Questions We Get Asked

“Do my kids actually get free haircuts?”

Yep. No strings, no upsell, no “surprise fee at the end.” Free.

“Can I bring three kids and a newborn?”

Yes. Bring ’em. The newborn might enjoy the experience more as a spectator, but you’re welcome to try. 😄

“My child is shy / has sensory sensitivities. Can you still help?”

100%. Our barbers have mad patience. Quieter clippers, scissors-only cuts, extra breaks, whatever your kid needs—just let us know. We’ll make it work.

“What if we don’t make it during event hours?”

Haircuts are first come, first served, subject to barber availability and capacity. So yes, it’s possible we might be swamped later in the day. But come anyway—our team will do their best to fit you in.

“Is the food donation really required?”

Nope. Optional. Free haircut either way. We just think it’s cool to do good together.
